Professional Skills Tests

Applicants must pass Professional Skills Tests before they begin a teacher training course; these are online tests in literacy and numeracy.

Detailed information on the tests, including practice tests can be found on the Get Into Teaching website. You are advised to read through this information carefully.

Key points:

  • you take your tests at a LearnDirect centre - you can book them online
  • you can only take the tests once you have applied for teacher training
  • you don't have to sit both tests on the same day

In February 2018, changes to the arrangements for the skills tests were announced:

  • Candidates will have unlimited attempts to achieve a test pass.
  • The 2-year lockout period will be removed; candidates previously locked out will be able to book tests for both subjects.
  • All candidates will be able to book 3 tests per subject, free of charge. A charge will be applied from the fourth test attempt per subject.
  • If you have paid for and taken a second or third attempt at a test on or after 24 October 2017 and before 14 February 2018, you will automatically receive a refund for the cost of your test.

If you have different needs to other candidate; for example dyslexia, a disability or impairment or if English isn't your first language, you can ask for special arrangements to be made or additional time in your tests. You need to make the request to Learndirect in advance and will be required to provide evidence to prove you require those arrangements.

Preparing for the tests

Practice is essential.

There are books of example tests and practice papers available to read in the Careers and Employability Centre or to borrow from the university's learning centres. They are also available to purchase from retailers.

There are practice materials and also practice skills tests on the Get into Teaching website. As there are only four of each of the tests online, you will soon get used to the questions. It's recommended that you use these once you feel ready to sit your actual tests. This will give you a better feel for what it will be like on the day at the LearnDirect centre.

Support Sessions

Several institutions offer free support sessions for the skills tests. It is advisable to check with the training providers directly. Some will also offer these as part of their open days programme (for example SHU open days can be found via
