Options with your Subject

You may have chosen your degree with an ideal career in mind, or you may have wanted to keep your options open. Some subjects naturally lead to specific careers, but that does not mean you will choose the most obvious route.

There are many career options that are open to graduates of any discipline so you may find yourself with a wider choice than expected. This can include jobs, training, internships and further study.

Don't restrict yourself to the suggestions in your subject area, if you have ideas then use these pages as a starting point for research. Teaching and law are two of the most obvious areas where graduates can follow a path from any degree subject for example, but there may be routes into many careers even if you think you haven't studied a relevant subject.

Which Sector might suit me?

You may find it helpful to think about industry sectors, such as the Public, Private or Third Sectors, and decide what feels like the best fit for you. Not sure what is meant by the Third Sector? It employs 800,000 people in the UK alone. You can read more about it here, or click on the Useful Files PDF on the right hand side of this page.

Ethical careers

Choosing the right company or organisation whose values yours might be something that is important to you. Environmental and social values in the workplace have never been more important as an increasing number of graduates choose ethical careers. If you are looking for a career that makes a contribution to more than just your bank balance then a job with an ethical employer might be for you.

Ethical businesses are concerned with both people and the planet, and try to have a positive impact on the environment, society and communities. You can read more about ethical careers on the Prospects website here.

Don't forget you can always speak to an adviser to get more support with your career planning.
