Minority Ethnic Students

The Careers and Employability Service is  committed to ensuring that all students make a successful transition into the world of work or further study. We work closely with particular employers through our Career Mentoring scheme and collectively through the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services (AGCAS), to ensure that employers' recruitment practices reflect the diverse student population.

Equality, Inclusion and Diversity are key themes in graduate recruitment and responsible employers monitor their recruitment practices to ensure they are fair and equal and do not discriminate against people based upon an ethnic or cultural bias.

A number of recruiters also take active steps to attract and recruit graduates from diverse social, ethnic and cultural backgrounds so their workforce reflects the diversity of the population at large. Such 'positive action' may involve employers organising targeted training opportunities, work experience or mentoring schemes for people from specific backgrounds. These opportunities aim to give people from backgrounds that are under represented in that organisation an insight into the workplace, an understanding of a job role, or preparation in job search techniques. This will hopefully encourage people to apply and compete more effectively in the competitive job hunting process.

The Guardian UK 300 (GTI) highlights the most popular graduate employers by different demographics. Ask to see a reference copy at the Careers and Employability Centre.

If you feel there are cultural, religious or other reasons relating to your ethnicity that affect your choice of career, career planning or job search strategy, please come and talk about these with our  advisers.  It is important to remember that employers are not allowed to treat a person less favourably than others due to their race, ethnicity, religion or belief. This is discrimination and is illegal. If you believe that you have been discriminated against in your search for work or feel that an employer has treated you unfairly on the basis of your ethnic origin, please  make an appointment with our advisers to discuss the situation in confidence or contact an adviser at  Hallam Union Advice Centre or visit your local Citizens Advice Bureau.
